Eight Common Patterns and External Structures in Chinese BaZi

When mortals are born, there exists a disposition, akin to the essence of one’s name. From high officials to commoners, none are exempt from this. However, dispositions may vary in their success or failure, excess or deficiency. Dispositions come in many forms, broadly categorized into eight dispositions and external dispositions.

The Eight Dispositions are:

(1) The month’s earthly branch’s intrinsic energy penetrating the celestial stems (e.g., if the month is Tiger and the heavenly stem is Wood, if the month is Rabbit and the heavenly stem is Wood, if the month is Dragon and the heavenly stem is Dog, if the month is Snake and the heavenly stem is Fire, if the month is Horse and the heavenly stem is Fire, if the month is Goat and the heavenly stem is Earth, if the month is Monkey and the heavenly stem is Metal, if the month is Rooster and the heavenly stem is Metal, if the month is Dog and the heavenly stem is Earth, if the month is Pig and the heavenly stem is Water).

(2) If the heavenly stems do not penetrate the earthly branches, but the gods within the earthly branches do, then the disposition is determined by those gods (e.g., if the Tiger month doesn’t have Wood penetrating the heavenly stems but has either Fire or Earth penetrating the earthly branches, then Fire or Earth will be considered).

(3) If neither the earthly branches’ intrinsic energy nor the gods within the month penetrate, then the comparison is made based on the intrinsic elements of the month, selecting the one with power and no destructive combination.

(4) Comparisons cannot be made using Assistance or Killing gods, and wealth and authority are not considered within the eight dispositions.

Below are detailed examples of the eight dispositions:

For a Wood born in the Rabbit month, which involves Assistance and Killing gods, it’s not within the eight dispositions, explained in the external dispositions section.
